Susan Leonard has taught Health and Physical Education in the Scottsdale Unified School District since 2003. She earned a BA in Physical Education and History from Doane College, a Masters in Physical Education from the University of Nebraska, and initiated doctoral work at the University of Iowa in the area of Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Child Development and Counseling. Susan was recognized as a 2007-08 Arizona Middle Level Teacher of the Year. In 2012, she was chosen as Arizona Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and served as the 2014-15 President of Arizona Health and Physical Education. Susan achieved National Board Certification in 2013. Susan is probably best known for her child advocacy work empowering students with cross-curricular opportunities. She was part of a SHAPE America National Taskfore to rewrite National Standards into kid-friendly language published in 2016 and her students have been chosen to present at several Arizona Health and Physical Education State Conventions. She currently serves as a Co-Chair of the SHAPE America National Board SIG.
